New Members

We always welcome people who would like to join our club!

New members are always welcome. Thursday is our main training night. There is no formal Starter Group on these evenings but there are always a range of speeds and abilities graded into 6 groups. The sessions are shown on the website training page, together with the grading criteria. Note, however, that the distance can range from 4/6 miles. For your own health and safety you should be able to run these distances in 50/65 minutes (11-12 minutes per mile) in order to stay with other runners out that evening. So for those who have some experience of running, please just come along to the Wootton Community Centre, Curtlee Hill, Wootton Fields on Thursdays @ 7.15pm,make yourself known to a member of the committee and we will ensure you are placed in the appropriate group for you. We also require you to complete the New Runners Induction  Form and bring this with you on your first session. You can have up to 3 taster sessions  at a cost of £1.00 per session, to evaluate whether the club is right for you, then make a decision to join or not.
For joining information and application forms please scroll down the of the page.

N.B. Failure to complete membership forms after your inaugural 3 sessions will mean you will not be able to continue to  train with us or race as an affiliated runner.

STARTER GROUPS
For those who are very new to the sport, periodically we will run starter groups, to get you on the road to fitness, and give advice on how to develop you running ability. Starter groups sessions will be on the first Thursday of each month.

If you wish to attend one of the above starter group sessions, please contact Nicki Harris by email nicki.harris01@btinternet.com or just come along to the Wootton Community Centre, Curtlee Hill, Wootton Fields on Thursdays @ 7.15pm, and make yourself known to the Group Leader for that evening. We also require you to complete the New Runners Induction Form and bring this with you to your first session.

The link below gives comprehensive Starter Group details, we would encourage you to read this before attending.

BEGINNERS TESTIMONIALS
Nervous about coming along?  Here are 2 testimonials about the experiences of a couple of new members:

Testimonial 1
After training and running the Daffodil 10K at Kelmarsh Hall in March 2006, a friend suggested I joined a running club. So I rang Wootton Road Runners and I was told that they meet once a week on a Thursday night, and that I would be more than welcome to come along, so I did at the end of March. To be honest I was worried that I would not be good enough and I had lots of negative thoughts. At the start on Thursdays, training nights, that all seemed to come true, as I was finding it very hard. I was beginning to think was this really for me, but I stuck with it. I was also encouraged to enter a few summer races with the club to which I did.I have had some bad runs ( but don’t we all) but there is always someone there to pick you up and encourage you to carry on so I am glad I stuck with it. So with the help and support of fellow runners (all groups) and group leaders I have gone from strength to strength. Seven months on, and I have just completed a 12 mile run with some of the girls from the club I feel so proud of myself but I know I could not have achieved this with out the running club.

Testimonial 2 - From Couch Potato to Pseudo Athlete
I started running in September 2002 when my then girlfriend decided that she was going to do the next London Marathon and needed a way to get herself fit.  On the grounds that if she could do it then so could I, I joined in.  We chose WRR, as when phoning all the clubs in the area they were the only ones who didn’t ask our mile times and seemed interested in having complete novices joining. My first session was a five mile run; though run was probably too grand a term for it, with Maggie and some other first timers around Brackmills.  I don’t remember how long it took, but we didn’t stop and it hurt on Friday morning…  After that I haven’t looked back, now I run the Cross Country series, the summer road racing series and my trousers fit again!  The club is very supportive of all its members, whether you’re completely new to running as I was or are an old hand just moved to the area.Thursday night is the set club training night.  There are 6 groups currently; divided by expected five mile time, but these are only guidelines.  Members go up and down as it suits them because of injury or because they’ve improved and get a better workout in the next group up, though if you join at the bottom and race ahead of everyone else expect to be asked to move up next week! Other members go running during the week and this is an opportunity to raise your weekly mileage whilst still having friendly people to talk to who will support you and you can even suggest your own routes to try. An annual subscription is £25 and although a pair of proper running shoes will cost about £100 they should last about 500 miles, at ten miles a week that’s a new pair of shoes a year.  So including club membership it averages around £10 a month so it compares favourably to gym membership of £35 a month.  Whilst you don’t get cold or rained on in the gym, how many gyms arrange trips to the rugby, a curry evening or a Christmas ball?To my surprise I have found that from being totally opposed to any form of exercise at school, I actively enjoy running and I look forward to both the official training night and my other weekly run.  Certainly being a club member helps as I find running on my own boring and I give up and go home!
